How to Easily Tighten a Canvas

A relaxed canvas

Can all types of canvases be tightened?

This technique works for linen canvases and cotton canvases. Unfortunately, if your canvas is made of synthetic fabric, there isn’t much you can do, at least as far as I know.

However, if the issue comes from a poorly applied or low-quality primer, the problem will likely come back.

The Recipe

Between 12:15 AM and 12:30 AM

Easy on small formats

More difficult on formats above 50 x 50 cm

Low cost

  • Hot water

Or a sponge

Hair-dryer

Step-by-step

Step 1
  • Run your cloth under hot tap water.

  • Wring it out very well.

The cloth must be damp, not soaked.

  • Moisten the entire inside surface of the canvas (the stretcher-side) with the cloth (or the sponge).

You only need to moisten it. No need to flood the canvas.

Do not wet the painted side.

  • Use the hair dryer to dry the canvas, always from the inside.

Move it back and forth and avoid staying too long in one spot to prevent burning the canvas.

  • The canvas will tighten.

If you feel the canvas is still not tight enough, you can repeat the process.
